Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have questions about our website design and development services? If so, we have answers to the most common inquiries we get. See below for more information.
Would we be better off hiring our own, in-house web designer?
This question is very similar to asking whether your business should retain an in-house lawyer or accountant. It depends on the amount of recurring work you can offer to that person. If you only need to build an effective website, with minimal maintenance and upkeep, you may be better off outsourcing it to a website design and development company like ours.
How much do you charge for developing a website?
The answer to this will depend on the scope of your specific project. We encourage setting up a meeting with us to discuss your needs. We can do this online, or in-person. We can then get you a more accurate quote. You can also get an idea of general pricing for various website types by viewing FAQs at the links below:
How long will it take to build my website?
After we meet to discuss your website needs, we will send you a quote, and it will include timeline specifications. Like your budget, the answer to this question can depend on quite a few factors. We will look at your project’s scope, and check whether or not you have your content ready for publishing. We can finish a typical website in a matter of weeks. However, you may want to check out the FAQs at the following links. They give general ideas of timelines that we estimate for certain types of websites:
What are the ongoing costs associated with a website?
Apart from our web design and development services, organizations will always incur the following costs to keep their website published online. They are:
- Annual domain registration fee: A domain name is similar to owning a phone number - it is your ‘address’ on the web. A domain registration fee reserves this ‘address’ for you, so that no one else can use it. However, this reservation alone does not mean your website can ‘go live’ on the Internet. It is just a reservation.
- Website hosting: Website hosting is like paying for airtime to be able to use your phone and phone number to make calls. It allows your website content, with its design and features, to be visible when someone visits your domain name. This is done by storing files on a server, and then sending them to your visitors’ computers and devices, when they ask for them. Many companies offer this sending of files as a paid service, for as long as you want to use them. They are called web hosting companies. Their pricing can be based on several technical features.
Some optional hosting features, which can come with extra fees, include:
- Data encryption via Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
- Dedicated IP address
- Web application firewall
- Website security monitoring services
- Website malware removal services
- Website backup services
Whether or not you need these extra services will depend on your specific website requirements. We can advise you on which ones you need, when we make a website for you.
You may also want to hire a company like our for ongoing maintenance and content updates on your website. The fees for this can vary depending on your needs, and the provider you choose.
How should I prepare content for my website?
Our experienced website designers and project coordinators will guide you through this process. In the industry, we call this “Information Architecture” (IA). It is not just about the writing itself, but about planning for the right kind of content, in the right places on your website.
If you happen to be stuck for words, or need help with the writing portion of your website, we can refer you to content producers. We can also refer to you Chinese translators, if you need them.
Does your website design and development service include SEO?
Every website we design and develop includes considerations for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Search engines, such as Google, can easily understand what your web pages are about, based on the inclusion of keywords in your copy. Depending on how you write your content, you can increase the chances of your web pages showing up in search results. If you are concerned about SEO, we can offer you more advice on what to do. Our tips can help your website rank highly for the keywords that are important to your business.
Will we be able to see how many people have viewed our company's website?
Of course! In addition to your volume of traffic, you can also learn about the quality of your website visitors. Analytics reports can reveal the location of your visitors, how they landed on your website and which pages they are most interested in.
Will you help us update our website content after it is launched?
Yes. We offer website management services as an optional subscription-based fee for our clients. It allows you to send us a simple email whenever you need us to make changes to your website. We will also do technical updates as part of this service, and maintain backups for you.
I don’t have a lot of technical knowledge. Will I be able to manage my own website content?
In addition to maintenance packages, we provide in-person training for customers who prefer to manage their own websites. We will explain the general instructions that apply to all websites, as well as the specifics that apply only to your website, or websites we make. If you still need help, our technical support team is just an email or call away.
Which domain is better - .ca or .com?
There is no right answer to this question. The following information may help you make a choice that suits your needs:
- .ca domains are a good option when .com domains with the same name are taken.
- .ca domains usually represent companies and individuals residing in Canada. The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) stipulates that only Canadian residents and Canadian corporations may register for .ca domains.
- Once a visitor reaches your website, there is no visible difference between .ca and .com domains.
Who owns my website domain, me or 5U® Website Design?
You own your domain. 5U® Website helps customers to registration domains but customers own the domains. Customers can request to transfer the domains they own to any domain registrar so that the domains are under their own accounts.
Can you help us set up our business email accounts?
Of course! We can help you set up emails such as john.doe@example.com, or info@example.com (where “example.com” is your own domain name). We also teach clients how to import their emails into popular mail programs. These can include Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, Google Mail and other email Apps installed on smartphones.
